We visited Devil’s Tower during our Grand Glacier Stone road trip in 2020. We took advantage of the yearly pass that the National Park Service has and spent about 2 hours touring the area. Unless you’re into climbing, there’s really two main draws to this spot: the rock formation itself and the prairie dogs.
These little guys are all along the field at the base of Devil’s Tower. You can pull off to the side and snap some pictures. You will end up with watching them for fun pictures while they are in turn watching you right back. You might even get to see a couple of them chase each other around for seemingly no reason (I think all those entrances go to the same tunnel guys).
On to the main attraction, we parked in the main lot and walked up to the base of the tower. The whole path around is either paved or hard pack. If you’re lucky you might see someone trying to climb the tower, which is apparently allowed with a purchased permit.
The hike around the base is a little over a mile with only gradual elevation changes. We went during the fall, but it seems like a place that snakes would be more than thrilled to call home. We also saw chipmunks and deer in addition to the prairie dogs at the base. This whole stop can be done in probably two hours. Here’s the full picture gallery. Devil’s Tower Gallery
